Subsidiary Cup Winners

The Subsidiary Cup final was, as most expected a tight affair.

Wallsend had the better of the first half, Emma Hewett and Liz Fraser both testing the keeper and Chloe Sharp heading wide from a corner. Alnwick had their chances, but the backline held firm with Sharp the pick of the defenders and keeper Holly Jenkins only having the one save to make

The 2nd half Alnwick come out like they’d had a half time rocket from the management team, whatever was said had the desired effect as the dominated the opening period. And not unexpectedly they took the lead on 51 minutes, Sharp for once not getting the better of the forward Stewart, who raced away to slot home.

The goal shook Wallsend from the 2nd half slumber and they gradually began to get a foothold back in the game, Chloe Mark seeing her shot saved and Holly doing well to keep Alwick from doubling their lead. The equaliser arrived on 75 minutes, a foul on Hansen gave the striker the opportunity to strike at goal, and she didn’t disappoint as it crashed off the underside of the crossbar and to the feet Nicole McEvoy who smashed home from close range.

The remainder of the game become somewhat frantic with both sides pushing for a winner but to no avail as the fulltime whistle blew with the teams locked at 1-1 and for the second game running both teams had to endure a penalty shoot out.

Watson, Dack, Kennedy, Hansen and Travis where all sucessful from the spot, with Holly saving from from Jackman and seeing a Patterson effort go wide to hand Wallsend BC Women the Subsidiary Cup.

Many thanks to Alnwick Town Ladies and the NERWFL for putting together the cup in a very testing season.

Manager Abi said after the game “Incredibly proud of our squad today, showing grit and determination to come back from 1-0 down and see it through to the penalty shoot out. It’s been a challenging season, these players have adapted with the changing environment of Covid, in/out of lockdowns but still challenged in every game. A fantastic way to end the season, I’m looking forward to 21/22 season and continuing this success”.
